There are many useful strategies to help manage your stress and help you deal with the different stresses you encounter in your life. These strategies will also help you to create an action plan to combat stress.

It’s possible for you to follow a systematic stress management approach, wherein you can be objective and true about how the pressure has affected your physiological and emotional well-being.

This article will help you realize how to recognize the things that can cause you stress and allow you to plan the right solution for you. You can’t get rid of stress. But you can manage it. The following tips will help you to create your personal stress management program.

Identify what is important:  Keep a sense of perspective, despite your worries and anxieties. Identify your priorities and be flexible to your schedule and remain true to your values. Ask yourself if you’re using your time and energy wisely? Have you been spending too much time on something that isn’t as important as others? Reassess and identify what’s urgent and what can wait. Do you have to read and answer all those emails today? I thought not.

Make an inventory:  Do you know what causes your stress? Is it personal or related with your work? Is it a problem with your health? Is it money, life at home, or your neighbors? Is this a by-product of the major decision you made for your life? Stress has different sources and this is caused by a blend of different elements in your life. Can you specify the things you do when you are angry, nervous, anxious or frustrated?

Rank your stress:  Make a list of the top ten things that you think have caused the most stress in your life, and then rank each one using a scale of 1-10, with 1 as the lowest.   Review your list after a week, and then verify if those are really the important issues that you face.

Evaluate and plan your stress management skills:  How you cope will require stress management skills to enable you to surpass the challenges you encounter in life in the best way and to minimize negative consequences. Choose. Will you choose to remain stressed or will you choose to be strong and use your skills to control matters? How you cope will depend on your action and emotional strengths. Can a solution be created? List the stress management skills that you’ll use in various situations. Make a list of the things you need to accomplish and stressful things you need to stay away from, or ask the help of a friend or loved one.

Improve Your Time Management Strategies:  Try to organize your time, projects and workspaces. A well-organized working environment will make you less stressed and a sense of being in control. Learn how to make lists. Rank your list and make sure you tackle your task in order of priority. Leaving an urgent and important task to the end of the day may increase your stress levels.

Treat yourself:  This is my favourite one. Grab a break and treat yourself with something rewarding after a stressful day ends. A glass of wine when you get home, a good warm bath or enjoying a good movie will do. Leave the day’s issues to one side and relax so you are fully re-charged for the next day.

Understanding the root causes of anxiety disorders, such as post-traumatic stress disorder, obsessive- compulsive behaviors, panic attacks, and other irrational fears will help you to develop a self-help stress management program tailored to your specific needs.

Under normal circumstances, stress causes out bodies to react naturally against any perceived threats. However, elevated levels of stress can cause negative “fight or flight” reactions in our bodies; physically, emotionally and mentally. These high levels of anxiety are caused by the amygdala, a small organ in the brain that controls anxiety and stress levels.

The amygdala, a part of the limbic system located in the temporal lobe of the brain, is responsible for how individuals react to outside stimuli or threats. Emotions triggered by the amygdala, such as fear and aggression, are responsible for heightened stress and anxiety. In individuals suffering from an anxiety disorder, the amygdala does not separate outside stimuli and external threats from how our bodies physically react to any perceived emotional threats. Therefore, since there is no separation, the amygdale will react in an improper way in anxiety disorder patients.

Basically, anxiety disorders are caused by an individual’s inability to separate their thoughts and feelings from what is happening in the real world, so their bodies react to the stressors and cause more symptoms of stress, mentally, emotionally and physically.

The key to starting a self-help stress management program for anxiety is to understand that thoughts and feelings are not logically separated from what is fact. Understanding this can help break the cycle of fear that your mind has created, which can help you be less stressed out.

Ask your psychologist for some help getting started with your self-help stress management program, but try to steer clear of prescription medications. While that will ease your symptoms of stress and anxiety, it does not confront the underlying problems. For help in finding a structured self-help program, search the Internet.
